When it comes to ecommerce hosted solutions I consider Volusion and BigCommerce to be leaders. Here is a comparative review of the 2 ecommerce solutions weighing out the critical feature differences between the two in detail.
Sign up and Set up
Both the softwares offer a free trial after a 60 second sign up. Set up is free just as any other ecommerce software in the market.
Dashboard usability
BigCommerce dashboard is both easy to understand and also has a step by step process to guide you set up online store within minutes. This is not the case with Volusion as the dashboard is not very user friendly and felt lost the first time I logged in. Navigation and feature access is also similar for both the softwares.
Design intuitiveness
One area BigCommerce beats Volusion and any other ecommerce solution is its unique drag and drop functionality. Opening your store in design mode will enable one to move blocks of elements around the site. This feature is missing in Volusion and every other ecommerce solution provider currently in the market.
Free Templates
BigCommerce has a bunch of industry specific templates with a decent enough design for free. Volusion’s free themes is too simplistic and it is disgusting to go online with such a theme.
Small and Medium sized vendors
I find BigCommerce functionality more inclined towards small retailers. Manual entry of orders, customer relationship manager, .csv export and import of inventory and customers makes BigCommerce ideal for small or medium sized vendors.

BigCommerce SEO options has been reviewed by the best SEO experts in the industry and the suggestions has been incorporated in to the software. Volusion and BigCommerce features are a good match to each other except for BigCommerce has a few more critical features like proper use of nofollow, custom product, category and web page URL structure and automated 301 redirects.
Other Functionality
BigCommerce has about 100+ third party integrations. Hence you will not miss out on any key feature. Volusion on the other hand has all major features built in to the software making it a bit bulky on the server side.
Overall
BigCommerce is cheaper(Overall costs), lighter, easier to use than Volusion and is a perfect ecommerce solution for small retailers or small and medium level enterprises.
